Operating principle of water softener
The hardness of water is mainly composed of its cations: calcium (Ca2+) magnesium (Mg2+) ions. When raw water containing hard ions passes through the ion-exchange resin layer, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are exchanged with the sodium ions in the resin. The resin absorbs the calcium and magnesium ions while the sodium ions enter the water. The water thus flowing out of the exchange is softened water with the hard ions removed. As the exchange process continued, the Na+ in the resin lost its exchange function after all was removed. At this point, Nacl solution must be used to regenerate the resin and replace the Ca2+ and Mg2+ adsorbed by the resin. The resin re-adsorbed sodium ions to restore the softening exchange ability.
